AbstractThis paper describes the development of a new range of bilingual dictionaries which are based on translating the explanations in monolingual Cobuild dictionaries2 into the user's mother tongue. These dictionaries have been designed by Cobuild's Editor-in-Chief, John Sinclair, primarily to address the needs of language learners. The philosophy which underlies the design reveals.
